As part of our series of DACS Foundation artist talks, photographer Peter Dazeley presented his latest book, Unseen London, in a free illustrated talk at DACS.

This event was an opportunity to see the backstage of some of the capital’s great theatres, into the changing rooms of some of our greatest temples of sport, into the heart of the Establishment, the boiler room of the city’s infrastructure, and behind the scenes of some of the most opulent buildings in the Square Mile.

Unseen London
includes fascinating interiors of fifty iconic London buildings. Dazeley’s aim during this long journey of discovery was to record hidden London, as it stands in the twenty-first century, for future generations. Many photographs in this book will be the last record of a disappearing world.

Dazeley kindly agreed to give this talk to members and friends of DACS. He discussed his photographs of these buildings - some derelict, but many still working; each described in the book with a thoughtful text by Mark Daly, and telling the story of how each of these places was created and how they are used. The locations for Unseen London were photographed over four years; for Dazeley, as a photographer, it was a joy to be able to share images of his wonderful city.

Art Talks was hosted by DACS, promoting the visual arts for the public benefit by making grants, providing education and training, organising public programmes and carrying out vital research.

About the artist

Peter Dazeley FRPS, known as Dazeley, is a celebrated London photographer renowned for fine art and advertising photography. He was born in West Kensington and studied photography at Holland Park School, now known as the Socialist Eton. Being dyslexic he left school at 15 without any formal qualifications. He feels his dyslexia is an asset because it gives him the ability to look at problems and objectives from a different point of view; he is a meticulous planner and imaginative problem solver.

His work has won many awards from organisations across the world, including the Association of Photographers and the Royal Photographic Society in the UK, EPICA in France, Applied Arts Magazine in Canada, and Graphis Inc. in the USA. Dazeley is one of the few modern photographers whose fine art work is produced as platinum prints and is currently working on several fine art projects out of his own studio complex in Chelsea, London.
