Explanations

Common acronyms which appear on your royalty statements and what they mean.

Thinking about waiving a licensing fee? Talk to DACS first

Artists and estates are often asked to allow their work to be used for free, sometimes in the name of exposure, to support a worthwhile or non‑commercial project, or because the request feels informal or hard to say no to. While this can seem like a small decision at the time, agreeing to waive a licensing fee can have lasting consequences for your income, your rights and for other artists too.

What it means to waive a licensing fee

Waiving a licensing fee means agreeing not to be paid, either a one‑off fee or ongoing royalties, for the use of your work. Even though no money changes hands, you are still giving legal permission for your work to be used, often under terms that can be difficult to change later.

Terms to watch out for in licensing contracts and agreements

The wider impact on artists

When licensing fees are waived, it can contribute to a wider expectation that visual artists should work for free. Over time, this weakens the value of copyright and makes it harder for artists, estates and beneficiaries to earn fair income from their work.

Why we don't recommend waiving your licensing fees

Making an informed choice

You are always free to decide whether to waive a licensing fee. At DACS we aim to provide clear, practical information before you decide, so that any choice you make is fully informed.

If you contact us before agreeing to waive a fee, our Licensing team can:

  • look at how and where your work will be used
  • explain what an appropriate fee would normally be for that type of use
  • check whether any existing agreements apply, such as agreements already in place with certain organisations

This helps ensure you understand the potential value of your copyright, as well as the broader implications of waiving a fee.

Before agreeing to waive a licensing fee, even if the request seems low‑stakes or informal, we strongly encourage you to speak to us first. To receive guidance on licensing, including on estimated licensing fees, please share any licensing requests with the team at: licensing@dacs.org.uk
