Artist's Resale Right royalty calculator

When a work resells for £1000 or over, you may need to pay the artist a royalty payment under the Artist’s Resale Right Regulations 2006. These apply throughout the UK.

ARR royalty payment scale is cumulative, with different percentages due on different bands of the sale price. The payment on any work is capped at £12,000.

How the payment is worked out

What’s payable is the total of royalties due on each band, which are calculated as a percentage of the sale price:

  • £0 to £50,000 = 4%
  • £50,000.01 to £200,000 = 3%
  • £200,000.01 to £350,000 = 1%
  • £350,000.01 to £500,000 = 0.5%
  • Above £500,000 = 0.25%

The scale is cumulative. This means that when the sale price is higher than the first threshold, of £50,000, royalties due on each portion are calculated separately and then added together.

Example

An artwork that sells for £210,000. On the first £50,000 royalties of 4% (£2,000) are due. On the next £150,000 royalties of 3% (£4,500) are due. On the final £10,000 royalties of 1% (£100) are due. The total royalties due would be £6,600.

ARR royalty payment cap

The total ARR royalty payable on the sale of a work is capped at £12,500.

Currency change

On 1 April 2024, the currency for ARR calculation changed from Euros to Pounds Sterling. ARR royalties for sales made before that date are due on works sold for €1,000 or above.

Use our calculator to work out ARR royalties for all sales. Enter the sale price in either Euros or Pounds Sterling: it will apply the exchange rate for your sale day.
