A conversation about art and social media with Jeremy Hutchison and Ceri Hand

For artists working today, social media can present both challenges and opportunities.

Artist Jeremy Hutchison and curator Ceri Hand discussed the changing role that social media plays for artists alongside some helpful pointers for creatives to consider when using these digital spaces.

I always used to find it hard to know who I was talking to. Who is out there, in that great invisible sea? Who’s algorithm do I show up on? And who am I working for - albeit in an unpaid capacity - in producing streams of content and data?

Much of Hutchison’s practice examines social media, including his series ‘Dear Mr Zuckerberg’ - a correspondence with the tech tycoon which features personal reflections, intimate musings and thoughts about art, Big Tech, ecological breakdown, philosophy and politics. The ongoing project has developed to include a music video and an interview with Zuckerberg on Instagram Live, posted during lockdown.

In addition to the conversation, the event also featured a new performance by Hutchison, as part of this ongoing series of works.
