Artists Lindsey Mendick and Paloma Proudfoot joined writer Ferren Gipson to discuss their practice, exploring themes of gender and autobiography to their innovative exploration of material and form.

Celebrated for their independent practice and collaborative project, under the single artist identity, Proudick, both artists create work that celebrates the feminine with bold imagery and storytelling, often exploring personal histories.

In the history of western art, mediums that bridge the worlds of art and craft, such as textile and ceramic have often been stereotyped as ‘women’s work’ and beneath the ‘high arts’ of painting and sculpture. Mendick and Proudfoot embrace these mediums in their practice, creating work that challenges this hierarchy in a radical exploration of gender identity and a defiant subversion of the male gaze.

This event marked the publication of Ferren Gipson’s new book Women’s Work, celebrating the radical shift of applied arts from women’s craft and hobby, into the story of the history of art.

DACS was proud to work with Ferren and Quarto on the licensing of artist images in ‘Women’s Work’.
