DACS to participate in UK Government Working Groups on AI and Copyright
The UK Government has announced new cross-sector working groups on AI and copyright, bringing together voices from across industries to shape future policy.
The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle MP, and the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy MP, have announced cross-sector working groups to “explore practical solutions to the challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in relation to copyright”. DACS will be attending these working groups to advocate for visual artists and highlight the specific challenges generative AI poses to their livelihoods and rights.
Announced on 16th July by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the initiative brings together representatives from the creative and technology sectors. The working groups will support the government’s efforts to develop a balanced approach to copyright and AI, following a public consultation that received more than 11,500 responses.
As a representative of visual artists in the UK, DACS will contribute to discussions on key issues including transparency, consent, licensing, advocating for a balanced, forward-looking approach that protects artists' rights while allowing for responsible and ethical AI development.
The working groups will meet regularly in the coming months, with outcomes expected to inform future policy development.
