Working with Shakespeare’s Globe

We were delighted to work with Shakespeare’s Globe to license images for their Summer 2019 brochure.

When the Director of Shakespeare’s Globe alighted upon a book of Tish Murtha images, the office came to us to gain permissions for their summer season. Although our image library service, Artimage, didn’t initially hold the image in question (above), because of our close relationship with our artists and estates, we were able to contact Tish Murtha’s daughter, Ella Murtha, and get the images added.

    Licensing for the stage

We licensed artworks for two of the season’s plays - Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

For the frontispiece of Henry V, the Globe chose to license Tish Murtha’s Juvenile Jazz Bands, 1979, and for The Merry Wives of Windsor, a comedy about marriage, wealth and lies, the perfect choice was Pogus Caesar’s fun and flirty Dinner Ladies.

We worked closely with the Globe’s marketing team on behalf of our artist and estate, to ensure that all the necessary rights and permissions were attained, and that the brochure made a significant impact.

This is an exciting time to work with the Globe as their summer season focuses on exploring England’s past, present and future through the prism of Shakespeare. While the productions themselves will maintain their own design aesthetic, they all share a common thread that reflects on what Englishness means. As part of this, Shakespeare’s Globe decided to use prominent English documentary photographers from the second half of the 20th century, which is how Tish Murtha and Pogus Caesar came to be selected.

“As we explore the eclectic nature of our ‘sceptred isle’ on our stages this summer, we wanted the accompanying visuals to reflect the eclectic nature of our culture. We have brought diverse, modern visual representations of our nation into dialogue with Shakespeare’s plays, with each hopefully shedding light on the other.” – Shakespeare’s Globe.

    Catch Henry V at the Globe, 30 April – 11 October 2019.
Catch The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Globe, 17 May – 12 October 2019.

Did you know - the licensing fees we collect always go back to the artist or estate.
