Stormtrooper helmet gets a makeover by top contemporary artists

Art Wars, a collection of iconic Star Wars Stormtrooper helmets reimagined by contemporary artists, will be unveiled 9-13 October 2013 as part of the inaugural STRARTA Art Fair at London’s Saatchi Gallery.

‘Turning the dark side onto the art side’

The collaboration between Art Below-founder, Ben Moore, and the original Stormtrooper creator, Andrew Ainsworth, sees replicas of the iconic helmet decorated in a variety of styles by a host of high profile and up-and-coming artists.

Among the artists taking part are Yinka Shonibare MBE, Antony Micallef, Joana Vasconcelos, Damien Hirst, David Bailey, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Mat Collishaw and Mr Brainwash, all of whom are represented by DACS for Copyright Licensing and/or the Artist’s Resale Right.

The resulting pieces range from Yinka Shonibare’s textile-adorned Ipod Invader, to Mr Brainwash’s reincarnation of the helmet as a Campbell’s soup can, and Mat Collishaw’s anarchic Star F*cker.

Explaining the popularity of the project to The Telegraph, Ben Moore said:

“We all grew up with Star Wars, so there wasn’t much hesitation from Damien or the Chapman brothers in taking the offer up.”
