Bio

René Magritte (1898 – 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist known for his depictions of familiar objects in unfamiliar, unexpected contexts, painted or drawn in a highly naturalistic style.  Clouds, pipes, bowler hats, and green apples all remain some of the artist’s most immediately recognizable iconography.  Magritte’s work often provoked questions about the nature and boundaries of reality and representation, and has been of significant influence for future generations and movements including pop, minimalist and conceptual art.
