Bio

Charmaine Watkiss, born in London in 1964, creates narrative artworks that the artist describes as ‘memory stories’. Based on Watkiss’ research into the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, and made primarily in pencil, watercolour and ink on paper, Watkiss’ work engages with themes including, ritual, tradition, ancestry, mythology and cosmology.Watkiss completed her MA in Drawing at Wimbledon College of Art, 2018 and has exhibited widely since. Exhibitions include: ‘Witness’, an installation for the 12th edition of the Liverpool Biennial, 2023; ‘Charmaine Watkiss: The Wisdom Tree’, Leeds Art Gallery, 2022; ‘Drawing attention: emerging British artists’, the British Museum, 2022; ‘Charmaine Watkiss: The Seed Keepers’, Tiwani Contemporary, 2021; and ‘Breakfast Under the Tree curated by Russell Tovey’, Carl Freedman Gallery, 2020.Charmaine Watkiss lives and works in London.
