On the Easel with Alan Davey

I had a copy of A Map of an Englishman by Grayson Perry in my office for two years at DCMS, and loved it. It is the two halves of an Englishman's brain and a map of the anxieties and neuroses that make up the deep seated character of that person.

I love the skill of the draftsmanship, I love the look of it as an old map, I love the wit and intelligence behind the idea, I love looking at details of it and wondering what they really mean.

And I love the fact there are rude bits that people don't notice at first. It's clever, thoughtful and marvellous.

Alan Davey is Chief Executive of Arts Council England.
