At the age of 25, Philip Gurrey is already making a name for himself on the contemporary art scene. Gurrey has received a string of acolades and awards
including the PULSE Prize in New York in 2008.
A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art in 2007, Gurrey lives and works in Scotland. His new show 'The Action of Looking' opens at SWG3 in Glasgow later this month.
"I seek to explore the many facets of the human condition through face and figure in paint; pushing away from reality and an illustrative way of working into the oil paints own unique visceral language.
A common theme in my work is identity and through its inherent link to the subconscious I feel compelled to reveal/ask questions surrounding our understanding of ourselves as people.

"The title of this painting 'Aperture', relates to the lens or camera and the closed eyes of the subject. John Dunne described the eyes as 'windows to the soul' yet here they remain shut. This however does not cut the viewer off from the subject in fact it gives the viewer time and space to consider the work without being confronted or challenged by the eyes, possibly leading to a greater insight into the subject's thoughts.
There is a calmness to the expression yet the way the paint is handled lies in direct contrast to this. The left eye painted in a completely different manner to the
right yet the image remains coherent. "None of what the painting says or does can be
explained in words, the paint itself challenges and communicates to the viewer to reveal a much greater diversity of thought and emotion."
