I saw David Bailey's documentary on Andy Warhol on TV when I was very young. The way the controversy surrounding the programme was played out in the press was very compelling.

His coterie of beautiful transgender individuals, gay men, models, dancer’s, artists and musicians including The Velvet Underground, inspired me. I soon realised there was something other than the black and white depictions of The Beatles, repeated endlessly in the wallpaper of my sister's bedroom in our Liverpool Terrace. Peter Blake's Sgt Pepper LP Cover was the looking glass that I stepped into where I would find Andy.

I eventually did and he took this photograph of me at The Factory in 1985 one of several trips to New York with my own ©Exploding Plastic Inevitable©, Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Years later this image turned up at Hirschler and Adler Gallery in an exhibition curated by Anthony D'Offay in 2005. When I heard about it I was down there like a shot and now it's part of my collection. I don't usually buy photographs I prefer paintings but this one is special, to me anyway.
